American Axle & Manufacturing’s (AAM) technology is the first volume production application of a P3, 2-speed architecture in a drive axle (see image) - featured among others on AMG’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door 63 S E Performance. Named a winner of the 2022 Automotive News PACE Award, the rear drive unit provides superior vehicle performance in a compact, power-dense design. Other innovative design features include an electromechanically actuated two-speed gearbox as well as an electromechanically controlled limited slip differential (eLSD) - another industry first for an electric drive unit. Powered by AAM, the performance car generates 620kW/843hp at peak levels and clocks a 0-62 mph time of 2.9s. AAM’s e-Drive provides power/torque output of 150 kW/204 hp, adds performance in hybrid drive and helps enable zero emissions.
