Modular surface design for optimal corrosion protection and efficient lightweight
KIRCHHOFF Automotive Deutschland GmbH – Hall 5 | Stand 5118
Sustainability & the circular economy
From uncoated SIBORA material to a modular surface concept: In the first step, KIRCHHOFF Automotive and Volkswagen Group Innovation successfully completed the material and process development of a silicon-boron steel grade called “SIBORA” for a modified hot-forming process in 2024 (see image). SIBORA enhances crash safety through improved energy absorption while simultaneously reducing body mass. In the second step, corrosion protection for the SIBORA material is now being significantly improved through a targeted application of galvanized or AlSi coated surfaces, without compromising its high strength. The modular surface concept enables load-optimized components with locally tailored properties. This approach optimally combines material performance, process reliability, and lightweight construction, opening up new possibilities for durable, high-strength vehicle structures.
