“The Brick” – compact charger replaces a separate Mode 2 charging cable

As a proprietary development by Wentronic Solutions, the Mode 2 charging adapter “The Brick” (see image) enables AC charging of BEVs and PHEVs with up to 3.7 kW directly from standard household sockets (Schuko) using the vehicle's Mode 3 cable. The control unit offers adjustable charging current levels (6, 8, 10, 13, 16 A) as well as a programmable start delay from 0.5 to 8 h in 30-minute increments for PV and grid optimization. An automatic Power-On Self-Test (POST) checks the system before every charging process, while protective earth (PE), relays, current, and grid voltage are continuously monitored. The integrated AC/DC residual current detection reliably protects upstream Type A RCDs from blinding caused by DC fault currents. In the event of thermal overload, sensors in the plug and housing trigger power derating or a safety shutdown. The system meets the IP44 protection rating.
