Modular Connectors for Automated Vehicle Wiring Harnesses

Aptiv is developing modular connectors for flexible and standardized vehicle wiring harnesses. Instead of using multiple connector interfaces, the solution uses a common housing with interchangeable modules for signal, power, and high-speed data. Designed for automated assembly and auto-plugging, it reduces the risk of wire damage and enables smaller wire gauges, lower weight, and reduced system costs. By combining different terminal types within a single connector platform, harness designs can be optimized while supporting manufacturing and quality processes. The modular housing also allows terminal configurations to be updated without redesigning the connector system. Its standardized geometry is suitable for automated assembly and supports scalability and platform reuse across different vehicle architectures.
