Advanced Occupancy Classification (AOC) is Aptiv’s AI-based, camera-based occupant monitoring solution that uses an existing in-cabin camera to detect, classify, and monitor vehicle occupants in real time. By analyzing occupant presence, size, posture, position, and behavior, the system supports appropriate airbag deployment and distinguishes between adults, children, child seats, out-of-position occupants, and everyday objects. Compared with conventional seat-based sensing systems, AOC replaces dedicated weight, pressure, and capacitive sensors, reducing hardware complexity and potentially lowering system costs by up to 40%. The software-defined solution supports FMVSS 208 compliance, aligns with Euro NCAP objectives, enables over-the-air (OTA) updates, and supports future intelligent cabin safety and comfort functions.
