The SmartWave (see image) from the company Kunststoff Helmbrechts AG demonstrates the integration of electronics into a plastic component. A flat functional foil is initially fitted with conducting paths in a screen printing process before LEDs are added. A black 3D-shaped decorative foil forms the surface with a non-scratch coating. The plastic is then used to connect the two foils to form a sandwich component with integrated electronics. The wall thickness of the SmartWave is just 2.5mm. IML technology enables the SmartWave to boast a completely closed high-gloss surface with a black panel effect. By touching this surface, users can control several programmes and functions with capacitive buttons and sliders. The benefits of the hybrid construction: all operating interfaces are fully 3D-capable and the electronics are integrated into the component, meaning that no subsequent adhesion or other forms of bonding are required.
