Door panels made of pressed natural fibre materials are lightweight. The required ribs and retainers, which cannot be moulded from the fibre mat, can be produced by rear spraying slim functional elements made of PP onto the moulded NFPP (natural fibre polypropylene) mat. SMP has now made its process combination of press moulding and injection moulding in a single-step procedure suitable for series production in an identical tool. A total of up to 6800 door panels for a German premium vehicle that has been available on the market since the beginning of the year are delivered to the production facilities of its manufacturer from SMP factories in Germany and China every day. The weight advantage of these structural components, which weigh less than 1500 g/m2, is 1.6 kg per vehicle compared to injection moulding. The use of the fast-growing renewable raw materials flax, kenaf and hemp as a raw material base additionally helps to preserve fossil resources.
