Precise knowledge of the road ahead is a key requirement for more intelligent, safer and more efficient vehicles. Continental has therefore developed its electronic horizon (eHorizon, see image), which integrates digital map data and sensor data in order to enable drivers to take a look into the 'future'. The solution does so by recording dynamic and lane-specific data such as variable speed limits, traffic lights, roadworks or other problems on the road and immediately passing this information on to the vehicle electronics system or the driver, who can then proactively control his/her vehicle. In order to access the precise information on the road in use that is required by eHorizon, Continental has also developed its "Road Database" service. This service uses the vehicle itself as a sensor to record route information by using the sensors that it already contains for recording data on road geometry and street furniture.
